Informal Learning Strategies in Formal Settings: Observational Evidence

Abstract

Formal learning has been regarded as the dominant position in education for many years. However, the role of informal learning in education has been intensely discussed in recent years. This paper compares several informal learning strategies in two music composition lessons by observing music composition classes at a private high school in London and an international high school in Shanghai. It discusses how these two classes integrate informal music learning methods into formal music classes and whether the combination of informal and formal learning is more effective than entirely informal learning.
