E-Reading - the Benefits of Reading English Short Tales to Enhance Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This study focuses on the benefits of using short English tales to improve the reading comprehension competence on A1 English level student from Ecuador. The objective of this study is to find out if the use of short English tales could enhance the students’ reading comprehension competence. This study used an experimental group (EG) with 40 students. The EG was encouraged to read an e-book with 8 tales which were chosen according to the ages of the students. It had interactive worksheets that allowed the students to check their understanding and get feedback fast and easily.The data for this research were collected by means of a qualitative survey to identify learners’ perceptions towards reading English texts. According to the results reading English texts is important for Universidad de Cuenca and Instituto Superior de Pelileo students’ career because the majority of students think that reading English texts are fairly important. Also, they would like to increase the vocabulary and have a better understanding of them. Quantitative pre-test and post-tests were given to find out the students’ competence before and after facing the short English tales. The collected data were then analyzed by using the SPSS 23 statistical program and the edition of tables and graphs in Excel. The decisions were made with a significance of 0.05. In conclusion, students did significantly better in reading; using short English tales is an accurate way for teaching English reading comprehension.
