Building a Strong Equitable Learning Foundation

Abstract

Research supports that providing an equitable education requires systems, schools, and practitioners to meet diverse individual learning needs. A broad early childhood (PK-3rd) literature review identified six foundational principles that ensure ALL children and families are welcomed, represented, fully included, individually supported, and celebrated in the classroom (SAPHIER, 2017) which in turn, enable instruction to be as effective as possible so that all children make equitable gains on assessments. These 6 foundational principles include: 1. Inclusive Environments; 2. Universal Design for Learning (UDL); 3. Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) for academic and SEL success; 4. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy; 5. Emergent Bilingual Supports; 6. Strengths-Based Family Engagement. This session will provide a broad overview of each of the six foundational principles including concrete examples of implementation best practices. Participants will not only learn how to implement the foundational principles within their specific context, but will leave with resources to further their understanding.
