Lecturers’ Challenges, Attitudes and Readiness towards a Moodle-Based Online Learning under the New Normal in an Open Distance and E-learning Institution in South Africa

Abstract

In South Africa (SA), particularly since the eruption of COVID-19, the use of technology in the teaching of first-year students in ODeL (Open Distance and e-Learning) institutions has increased. This study focuses on the usage of Moodle, a modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment that has generated debate regarding its features and whether it enhances students’ performance. Since its launch at university X, Moodle has brought forth sizable challenges and attitudes toward lecturers that call for a lot of preparation to use it in teaching. The findings in this study presented challenges, attitudes, and level of preparedness that lecturers are at in the use of Moodle in teaching students on a distance basis. Using a qualitative approach based on an evaluation questions, lecturers’ challenges, attitudes towards Moodle, and Moodle readiness could all be identified. The findings demonstrate that, for the most part, lecturers’ educational methods had not changed as a result of utilizing Moodle. Few lecturers altered their teaching methods to conform to Moodle functionalities, and those lecturers were those who attended the university’s Moodle training sessions. Some of the conclusions call for more internal training programs.
