Using Online Evaluation Questions as a Qualitative Research Instrument to Support Students

Abstract

Qualitative evaluation questions, which focus on garnering qualitative data, have much to offer online lecturers and students and researchers, especially now that online pedagogically delivery is now the norm. However, this type of data collection is underutilised, and there is limited research that has been conducted on qualitative evaluations and its implementation. Underutilisation and limited research on these evaluations may present assumptions that this research tool may lack significance and depth. This study presents online open-ended evaluation questions as a means of data collection among distance education students to understand their learning needs. In this paper, I offer my experiences of developing and implementing pre, mid and post semester/ year evaluation questions as both a tool for student support and for qualitative research. Data was created for and collected from two modules in a distance education university in South Africa. This paper challenges preconceptions of ‘qualitative surveys ‘and to demonstrate that qualitative evaluation questions are an innovative, exciting, and flexible tool, with many advantages for lecturers and researchers alike. This paper offers an overview and illustrations of practical design information with examples.
