Increasing Social and Emotional Learning Competencies Through Use of Tabletop Role-playing Games

Abstract

The Improvement Science Study that was originally conducted aimed to investigate the use of tabletop role-playing games in supporting the social and emotional development of students in upper elementary grade levels. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study follows a team of invested school community members as they planned, implemented, studied, and reflected on the outcomes of implementing targeted social and emotional learning interventions to sixteen students from a small alternative school in Anchorage, Alaska. This workshop will briefly highlight the findings of this study but will prioritize the opportunity to experience this type of SEL approach in action as they become participants in a table-top role-playing campaign! At the close of the session, participants will not only have a better understanding of the importance of SEL integration but have the tools, inspiration, and empowerment to implement high-quality and authentic SEL-based interventions with the students they serve.
