Balancing Theoretical and Applied Learning in Translation Studies: Toward Significant Learning in Higher Education

Abstract

It is well-known that conquering significant learning requires a great deal of effort not only from educators, but also for learners, specially when it comes to higher education where the curriculum is quite framed by the timing as well as the contents and, in the case of Europe, by the ETCS system. Notwithstanding, balancing theoretical and applied learning may ease its success, since learners are more likely to find the theoretical aspects necessary to be applied in order to achieve learning objectives as well as learning outcomes. Hence, the aim of this work is to exemplify the need of applying theoretical aspects so as to get significant learning in higher education. In this particular case, an activity is to be developed in the last year of the Translation Studies (BA), specifically in the Translation II (German-Spanish) course at the European University of the Atlantic (Spain).
