Integrating Global Competence in English as a Second Language Lessons

Abstract

The relevance of global competence and its incorporation into language teaching and learning has been underlined in research regarding quality education. The current focus of global education in Malaysia through the integration of global competence in English as a Second Language (ESL) was highlighted in this article. The global competence of English language teachers aids students’ global competence development. The understanding and knowledge of global competence among Malaysian ESL teachers are examined in this study. It primarily examines ESL teachers’ perceptions of global competence in English lessons. 172 Malaysian ESL teachers completed the web-based google form survey questionnaire. The results show that ESL teachers believed global competence should be emphasized in English classes. The findings indicate that ESL teachers integrated globally competent teaching approaches into their ESL lessons. The respondents demonstrated comprehension and knowledge of global competence, albeit their understanding of the elements of global competence in ESL teaching was insufficient. The respondents also felt that the Ministry of Education (MoE) does not provide enough assistance to enhance their global. The findings were used as a model for a more comprehensive study focusing on integrating global competence in non-western and local settings. Furthermore, increased awareness of developing ESL teachers’ global competence and understanding its elements for integration in language teaching is required.
