Graphic Design Project Development at a Multilingual and Multicultural University

Abstract

Teaching at a university with a diverse student body, I am constantly redesigning my courses to fit the population better. The more excitement the prompt generates, the better outcome of the projects. Besides the artistic choices, students may also discuss their cultural heritage at the critiques and learn about each other’s stories. The description of the projects also invites students to experiment with other things such as their languages. The examples also include artwork from different countries in different languages. The pedagogical strategy is to ask the students to apply new knowledge (technical skills and design principles) to familiar information (their identity). Multiple prompts are shown, along with the reasoning and final outcomes.
