Are Threaded Online Discussion Forums Enhancing Deep Learning?: A Case of a Postgraduate Online Distance Learning Course

Abstract

The online facilitators use online discussion forum to create opportunities for learning through knowledge sharing, engagements and collaboration amongst MEd in ODeL course postgraduate students in the modules. This qualitative study used an online discussion forum as a pedagogical tool in identifying emergent themes from the posted deliberations by postgraduate students. Central to this single case study was to explore how threaded online discussion forums created opportunities for deep learning in a postgraduate module. Students deliberations in the discussion forums platform were retrieved verbatim to explore the relevance of discussion forums in enhancing deep learning. This study revealed that students benefit from the discussion forums as they are able to engage with content , other students and the facilitator. Thus this study recommends that more meaningful engagements should be created in the discussion forum for students bridge the gap between students and lecturers in an ODeL learning environment.
