Interdisciplinary Teaching in Undergraduate Education

Abstract

Interdisciplinary teaching is a teaching-learning strategy to extend skills of undergraduate students, as it enables tackling a single subject from a variety of perspectives. While traditional education tends to approach a given subject from the teacher’s own discipline and focuses upon the development of domain-specific knowledge and abilities, interdisciplinary perspective aims to foster boundary crossing skills which, in turn, guide to the combination of content (knowledge, skills, attitudes and values) and personal experiences that facilitate a more reflective understanding of reality. Hence, this allows the student to gain the ability to change perspectives and think critically, to integrate knowledge from different subjects, creating connections across disciplines and enhancing teamwork skills. To provide students with fundamentals to learn advanced subjects, knowledge about basic topics in Life and Medical Sciences Degrees is required. However, teachers may be able to enrich how they deal with a specific subject by collaborating in research projects that involve different disciplines.Additionally, collaboration between researchers from different Science realms may be crucial, as it further enhances the capacity to develop innovation in learning and has a beneficial impact upon undergraduate education. Thus, when the daily work of the teacher is specifically based on a multidisciplinary approach, students can take advantage of diverse expertise throughout the educational process. This contribution is focused on providing our experience on teaching in different subjects related to Medical and Life Sciences, after collaborating with professionals and private companies from different fields of study and having acquired a solid background and expertise in separate areas.
