Online Learning Experiences of Students of Determination in Dubai

Abstract

The global pandemic of covid-19 has affected teaching and learning across the globe. Some institutions were forced to close and switch from face-to-face classes to online learning. A lot has been reported about mainstream students’ learning experiences during the time of Covid-19. However, there is a dearth of scholarship that focuses on the learning experiences of special needs students who are referred to as students of determination in Dubai. The purpose of this study is to investigate online learning experiences of students of determination at a university in Dubai. The study was done using a qualitative case study and its paradigmatic position was interpretive. Ten students of determination were purposively selected to complete an open ended questionnaire and participate in semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed using content analysis. It was found that students of determination were satisfied with pedagogical approaches used by instructors and differentiated support they were getting. The study concludes that a systems approach is critical towards the successful online learning experiences of students of determination.
