COVID-19 Migration : Montana’s Influx during the Pandemic View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Anna Talafuse

COVID-19 significantly affected the real estate industry. In Montana, an out-of-state buyer influx was anecdotally noted; a descriptive research study developed, and a survey of Montana realtors found 77.4% of realtors reported an increase in out-of-state buyer interest and closing; a significant number were noted to be coming from California, Washington, and Colorado for housing purchases between February and August 2020. Reasons for relocation efforts included predominately safety and security and COVID-19 related concerns. The research addresses the increase in real estate closings within the state, reasons for relocation, and addresses managerial implications for the findings relating to advertising, tourism, and contactless shopping used within this industry. Additional implications focus on the importance of contactless showings, national visibility (especially in specific states), and tourism focusing on stated reasons for relocation. The findings impact advertising campaigns and tourism industries.

Post-pandemic Lifestyle Migration to the Coast : An Ethnographic Approach to Contemporary Mobilities in Southern Chile

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Cristobal Bravo

Lifestyle migration is a recent phenomenon profoundly intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. This type of internal migration is commonly associated with mid and upper classes and the deliberate choice of destination to settle where nature, the landscape and the amenities are the main motivations for leaving the city of origin. An anti-colonial approach of lifestyle migration assumes the power relations between new migrants and old residents, expressed in hierarchies between urban and rural, landowners and peasants, as well as between classes. The central-south coast of Chile is a destination that in the last 10 years has undergone an intensive urbanization of the coastline with significant impacts in areas such as environment, infrastructure and basic services, real estate and culture. Based on the above, the paper exposes some results of an ongoing ethnographic research in a world-renowned tourist hot spot for surfing, located in the south of Chile. We highlight the role that identity plays in this process, where lifestyle migrants tend to negotiate privilege in order to avoid being part of an uneven trend that jeopardize the pure and idyllic character of what was originally sought in the new destination. This research seeks to strengthen community resources to face urban growth as well as promote synergy between the different actors around the sustainability of this new migratory phenomenon.

Establishing Interrelationship of Activities in Creative Tourism in India View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Namia Islam,  Shubhajit Sadhukhan

Creative tourism gives a novel, diversified, and meaningful experience to tourists. It is distinctive due to the active participation of tourists in different activities along with the local community. The various activities in which tourist participates are the attraction of creative tourism. In India, the tourism industry is unaware of how one activity might persuade a tourist to participate in another activity. Hence, this study examines the interrelationship between major activities available for tourists in a city. This study identifies six major activities: Interaction with artisans, shopping, workshop visits, exhibition visits, co-creation, and local experience in the area. To find out the relationship between these, a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method (DEMATEL) is applied to form a structural model. A pairwise questionnaire was developed, and fourteen experts from various fields of tourism were interviewed. This study found that among the six activities, visiting the workshops had an impact on every other activity. In contrast, shopping does not affect any of them. It was also found that the interaction of tourists with artisans is the most influencing activity, which means a slight improvement in this will bring effective positive change in the rest of the activities. This study will help policymakers and development authorities understand the need to develop influential activities such as workshop visits and interaction with artisans in the priority phase, improving the whole system. The study will also help to develop creative tourism in India by investing resources in the most crucial sectors.

The Regionalization of Tourism in Santa Catarina, Brazil: Analysis of Municipalities' Participation in the 2023 Brazilian Tourism Map View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Marcos Arnhold Junior,  Pablo Flôres Limberger

The Tourism Regionalization Program is one of the most long-lasting public tourism policies in Brazil. Various actions from the program, such as the creation of tourism regions, the promotion of the formation of Regional Governance Bodies, and later the inclusion and categorization of participating municipalities in the Brazilian Tourism Map, contribute to the development of tourism being worked on by collectives in all Brazilian states. This work evaluates the evolution of the participation of municipalities in Santa Catarina in the Brazilian Tourism Map, from 2013 until its latest update in early 2023. To do so, exploratory bibliographic research was carried out, as well as documentary research, using the Brazilian Tourism Map 2023 website as a source of data for the reports that were synthesized and grouped to identify the process over time. A decrease in the number of categorized municipalities was identified, but an improvement in the categorization of A and B municipalities, with a decrease in municipalities in Categories C, D, and E. These results serve as a basis for public and private managers, at all levels, with information on the engagement of municipalities regarding Tourism Regionalization, demonstrating that strengthening actions should be put into practice to stimulate the participation of lower-ranked municipalities in the process of tourism development.
