Mobile Architecture as a Catalyst for Diversified Touristic Experiences in Egypt

Abstract

This research paper is concerned with alternative touristic approaches which can reach beyond the concept of mass tourism in Egypt. For decades now, the touristic boom in the country has been widely negligent to basic touristic concepts which can prove quite vital to the country’s economy including elite tourism, ecotourism and agritourism. The special focus of this research is the probability of successfully incorporating mobile architecture (portable homes, Recreation Vehicles, etc.) as a catalyst for tours which can diversify the touristic experience of the country. To achieve its aim, the research attempts to empirically formulate answers to critical questions concerning mobility-based tourism: Can infrastructure of Egyptian urban fabrics (including touristic sites) sustain frequent city roamers and their mobile structures? What genre of mobile architecture might thus be pursued in Egypt? What kind of experience (leisure, cultural, educational, etc.) can be offered through this alternative approach of tourism which is based on mobility? What are the targeted tourists’ sectors? What are the expected impacts of this touristic approach on the entire tourism industry in the country especially with respect to hotels’ business?
