Tourism and Working Conditions: A Focus on Mediterranean Tourism

Abstract

As recent (national and international) data suggest, the tourism industry has not been affected by the current crisis as much as other productive sectors, and it is also presented by governments as one of the areas in which political power institutions – at state, supranational, regional and local level – seem to boost employment, particularly for the (European) countries of the Mediterranean area. Within this framework, our question is: considering the general situation of precarity and flexibility at work in several crucial productive sectors, in Italy and more generally in Europe, and considering the high level of unemployment registered in the last years, what kind of work – and solutions – are proposed by (European, national and regional) governments when the focus on the tourism sector?
