Abstract
This paper will explore ways in which communities that depend on cultural tourism have sought buy-in for the purpose of making the sector more sustainable. Various factors contribute to the amount of successful community buy-in including authenticity, local board diversity and involvement, and use of historic preservation best practices. The main case study will focus on the nation’s oldest city of St. Augustine which faces sustainability threat to its cultural tourism from various angles including a changing tourist market, inauthentic experiences and climate change.
