The Use of Themed Entertainment Design in Museums and Heritage Sites

Abstract

Despite being perceived as very different genres of visitor attractions, theme parks and museums have become less distant in their interpretation practices. More and more museums and heritage sites are utilizing the techniques of themed entertainment including in situ display, overt storytelling, and immersion. Even some of the same design companies work in both spaces. This paper provides an overview of narrative and environmental techniques common to visitor attractions and investigates the ways in which these venues construct historical narratives for visitors. It then explores sites in the United States, England, and the Netherlands that employ these innovative design techniques. This presentation argues for more awareness of these principles as the incorporation of entertainment techniques seems inevitable in a time where visitor attractions compete with one another.
