Tourism in the Shadow of Terrorism: Minimizing Risk and Enhancing Experiential Value

Abstract

Many factors go into deciding on a travel destination and then designing and implementing an itinerary. The ever-present risk of terrorist attacks, now a worldwide phenomenon, raises specific questions. When should a destination simply be ruled out? When would alternate, contingency plans be warranted? How should an itinerary be designed and implemented, to avoid high-risk sites or actively to seek them out to enhance the value of the travel experience?
