Left Behind: The State of Philippine Tourism versus Its Asian Neighbors

Abstract

The Philippines offers varied types of experiences and destinations to choose from, yet the number of international visitor arrivals is relatively small compared to its neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. The Philippines’ inbound market in comparison to other ASEAN countries is highlighted in this case study. Specifically, it traces the Philippines’ international visitor arrivals from 1960 to 2016, and compares the international visitor arrivals of the Philippines at par with ASEAN countries for the year 2015. The intention of the case is to develop an understanding of the up and down movement of international visitor arrivals in a country. In the teaching notes, alternative courses of actions are suggested to answer the case questions. Comparative data and SWOT analysis are used to identify the possible factors on the increase and decrease of visitors arrivals of the Philippines versus its ASEAN neighbors.
