Abstract
Social Work as a scientific discipline and professional practice is a strategic environment for the development of Citizen Science. As established by the Spanish National Research Council, science is done by and for society. Moreover, participation as an essential principle of Social Work is a key element in the process of intervention with the users of social programmes and services and also for inclusion in society. There are different ways of involving people in scientific activity, from proposing research topics, identifying specific problems, collecting data, analysing and interpreting them, and above all, enriching the understanding of social reality with their life experience. Essentially, citizen science is concerned with bridging the gap between ‘science and society’ by surmounting the practice of science as separate from society or of science for society and instead, moving forward in a new context of doing science with society. For this, a necessary condition is the accessibility of information, not only from the open science approach, but also from Universal Design, including the understanding of the concepts by the different actors involved in the concrete action. This paper presents the work process developed for the elaboration of a social resources guide, framed in the friendly cities project, whose design has taken into account participation as a principle. The guide has been elaborated considering the bases of universal design and easy reading. From the development of the experience, the elements of citizen science and its value for the practice of Social Work are identified.
