Managing Sexual Consent in Seniors With Dementia: Creating a New Paradigm

Abstract

Very little consideration is given to sexual and erotic expression or intimate relationships among the elderly. The aging population continues to change and sexual connections remain important quality of living issues for a majority of those over 65. While there has been a more open view of sexuality in general, we fall short in addressing erotic and QOL needs for those with cognitive issues. A shift is necessary in how we evaluate capacity and consent among those with dementia, particularly with respect to erotic pleasure and sexual autonomy. This workshop presents information on how our aging populations are changing and how these changes can be accommodated in elder and care communities or facilities. Participants will discuss dementia and how pleasure and intimate contact for those so diagnosed are still entitled and varied expressions, without rushing to ascribe a label of abuse to them. The last part of the workshop will include brainstorming about how we can develop policies and procedures to help create environments that are understanding and accommodating of the erotic and intimacy needs of older adults with varying degrees of cognitive impairment.
