Sociological Analysis of Older-friendly Cities: The Case of the Municipality of Algorfa

Abstract

The aging of the population must be considered as challenges for present and future society. Age-friendly cities encourage the active aging of the population in order to improve the quality of life of citizens. According to the world health organization, there is a need for cities and communities that offer solutions to the needs of older people. This contribution is part of the international cooperation project “cities and communities friendly to the elderly: the case of Colombian and Spanish cities”. The main objective of this contribution is to identify the state of friendliness from municipality of Algorfa with the group of older people according to the areas to be considered in accordance with the Vancouver protocol. The methodological approach is qualitative, based on a case study: the municipality of Algorfa, in eastern Spain with very heterogeneous sociodemographic characteristics of its elderly population. The information collection technique selected to work with the population under study has been the focus group. All of them make it possible to identify the needs and social reality of the municipality from the experience of this group. Once the speeches of the study sample are recorded, a diagnosis is made based on the narrative analysis, which allows the identification of the needs of the elderly in relation to the aforementioned areas. This analysis has made it possible to demonstrate the reality of older adults and to collectively elaborate a set of recommendations, useful for the production of improvement strategies in terms of municipal public policy.
