Prevalence of Correlates of the Multi-theory Model of Behavioral Change (MTM) for Effective Interventions for Mental Health among Rural Elderly Populations

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Mental health risk factors exist throughout life. Older people experience life instabilities, bear the continual loss of capabilities, and face depleted reserves of their physical and psychological resources. Additional stresses that may be even more impactful on the mental health conditions of the elderly. This study takes into account the prevalence and theory-based correlates of mental health problems among rural elderly people. The behavior change intervention considers resilience training workshops spanning over a period of 6-9 months. The research tests the multi-theory model of behavioral change (MTM) and its proposed methodology to develop and implement a mental health intervention. The research utilizes the pretest-posttest design on a sample of 250 elderly individuals from rural counties in Nevada. The MTM-based intervention, SolACER determines its effects on the constructs compared to the knowledge base on the mental health of people more than 65 years old in rural communities in Nevada. It determines the correlates of behavior change. The 12-week intervention studies the efficacy of the MTM in predicting initiation and sustenance through a 54-item valid and reliable survey conducted pre-and post-intervention. The significance level is set at 0.05, and 95% confidence intervals. Paired samples t-test are utilized to compare the mean scores of MTM constructs across groups participated in the intervention session. Hierarchical regression models are built to predict the variance and to determine the relationship between measured variables. Results are explained based on the completion of statistical testing.

Ageing Population Policy Implications for the 2030 Agenda
Claudia Ribeiro Pereira Nunes
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
By 2030, older persons are expected to account for over 25 per cent of the population in Europe and Northern America, 17 per cent in Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, and 6 per cent in Africa. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets out a universal plan of action to achieve sustainable development in a balanced manner and seeks to realize the human rights of all segments of society, at all ages, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable, the ageing population. Ageing poses several challenges for governments, society and older persons, which require urgent policy responses. Anticipatory policy measures prepare countries for meeting these challenges. According to UN and OCDE reports, National Public policies preparing for an elderly population is vital to the achievement of the integrated 2030 Agenda, with ageing cutting across, at least, the goals of poverty eradication (SDG1), good health (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5), economic growth and decent work (SDG 8), reduced inequalities and sustainable cities (SDG 11). This research presents how the SDG's opportunities and contributions can affect older women and men in our society. The methodology is the quantitative analysis and exploratory study to help build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across SDG public policies in the interdisciplinary context.

Recent studies have suggested a link between climate and Parkinson's disease (PD) gait, with colder temperatures and higher humidity associated with worsened gait. Thus, understanding this relationship could provide insights into potential interventions to improve gait performance in individuals with Parkinson's disease in changing climate conditions. The mechanisms and mitigation of climate change effects on Parkinson's disease spatiotemporal gait parameters were the themes discussed with the evidence retrieved from the databases searched. The mechanism of climate change on Parkinson's gait parameters is not fully understood. Still, extreme temperatures and humidity levels are believed to worsen symptoms such as tremors and stiffness, which can significantly affect spatiotemporal gait parameters such as stride length and gait speed. Climate change can also lead to increased air pollution and extreme weather events, and the spread of infectious diseases, all of which can negatively impact cardiovascular health, which can impact gait in people with PD. Rising temperatures can also directly affect heart rate and blood pressure, exacerbating cardiovascular issues. These cardiovascular changes can affect gait in people with PD by reducing the blood flow to the muscles, leading to fatigue and decreased endurance during physical activity. Potential interventions include tailored exercise programmes, assistive devices, and environmental modifications to promote safe and effective gait performance. Parkinson's disease's spatiotemporal gait parameters may worsen due to climate change, necessitating environmental changes and gait improvement techniques. The current evidence is insufficient to fully comprehend this relationship and its potential implications for treating Parkinson's disease; more primary research is required.

Enforced Government of the Self
Ivy Li
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Canada’s parents/grandparents (PGP) immigration program was revised dramatically by the government in 2014 with three main changes: 1) the length of sponsor’s undertaking changed from10 years to 20 years; 2) the sponsor must meet the minimum income requirement for three consecutive years rather than previously only one year; and 3) a maximum number of applications that can be accepted was added to the program. Through in-depth interviewing sponsored parents and sponsor children, as well as community leaders and social workers, my cross-sectional qualitative study research project unfolds a comprehensive picture of the lives of older Chinese immigrants in Canada. Drawing on governmentality literature, especially Foucauldian government of the self, neo-liberalism, biopolitics and Donzelot’s “government through the family”, I examine the program and analyze reasons and implications of the policy changes. My findings reveal the design of the program, especially its enforced dependency/undertaking clause has negatively affected the life of the sponsored parents and their well-being. I argue the State utilizes the immigration program as a governance tool to distinguish its subjects as the “desirable” and the “undesirable” and transfers its responsibility to the shoulders of the unwanted immigrants such as sponsored older parents and their families by privatizing social responsibility and promoting and forging self-reliance and self-governed subjects. I argue the design of PGP immigration program and its changes indicate Canada’s immigration regime remains structurally raced, gendered, classed, and may be intertwined with other stigmatizing dynamics such as ageism, ableism, ethnocentrism etc. within the State’s power relation system.

Overcoming Inequalities and Enhancing Sustainability among the Aged
Philip Egbule
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The challenges of aging and how to cope with caring for the elderly are not peculiar to any particular society. The Bible clearly teaches that there should be reciprocal dependency between parents and children. While children depend on their parents in meeting their needs at early stage in life, children on the other hand, should care and support their parents when they are old. Unfortunately, there have been negligible attitude on the care and support the elderly receives from their immediate family members. The task which this research undertook was to explore a possible means of alleviating the plight of the elderly by pragmatically applying biblical teachings on family responsibilities and support from the church. Basically, the support provided by the church may include welfare packages such as feeding, clothing, housing and health care in the society. Hence, this study examined place of biblical teachings as well as involvement and assistance of the church in addressing inequality challenges and enhancing sustainability among the elderly in our contemporary times. Data for the study was gathered from Bible verses, oral interviews, relevant literature and news reports. Findings show that there is a paradigm shift in biblical principles. In conclusion, this paper, based on the cited Bible references, proved that adherence to biblical teachings will have positive effects on the well-being of older people in our societies. The paper argues strongly that to properly address the challenges of inequalities and enhancing sustainability among the aged, biblical teachings and practices are indispensable.
