Abstract
Conducted by two artist-researchers in population health, this workshop is for those interested in examining the aging, cultural, and social implications of retirement and how this growing population is uniquely positioned to meaningfully contribute to our communities and workplaces. Following this workshop, attendees will be able to: 1. Identify three aging and socially related implications that retirement presents to individuals and their communities 2. Articulate the advantages the aging/retirement population has to offer the workplace and communities 3. Apply this knowledge to real-life settings. Retirement can be one of the most precarious times in a person’s life. In fact, retirement is identified as one of the top 10 life stressors. For the individual, it carries physical, financial, and psycho-social implications. For communities, it presents economic and healthcare implications as evidenced by increased Medicare costs and elevated levels of care as a result of increased isolation, age-related cognitive decline, and stress. Despite the often-unflattering narrative surrounding retirees, this population has much to offer. For example, employees over the age of 50 demonstrate high levels of engagement in the workplace, have more experience than their younger counterparts, and represent half of the national consumer demographic. Research also indicates that twice as many successful entrepreneurs are over the age of 50 as opposed to 25. With age comes insight, perseverance, and experienced-based intellect. Considering the current implications and the opportunities that exist for retiring adults, we explore ways in which retirement can be re-imagined through an innovative, public health, prevention institute model.
