Adjustment to Retirement in Portugal
Ana Teresa Pedreiro,
Helena Loureiro
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The relationship between transition to retirement and individual state of health has been the subject of investigation in several disciplines, and, more recently, in Public Health. The effects of retirement on health and health behaviors will be different depending on the moment and the way the individual retires. The target population of this study was composed of individuals enrolled in 18 randomly selected health units in Portugal, who fulfilled the condition of being retired for less than 5 years. Focus group was used as a data collection methodology with simultaneous collection of quantitative information of sociodemographic characterization. The average age of the 146 participants was 63.7 years. 43.5% were male. Participants had been retired, on average, for 2.76 years. With regard to active life, 8.25% of the participants worked in the primary sector, while 22.68% worked in the secondary sector and the vast majority, 67.01%, worked in the tertiary sector. In relation to the themes that emerged from the focus groups, these were related to the moment Before Retirement, the moment After Retirement and the Perspective of the Future. The transition to retirement is an event associated, in most Western countries, with the onset of aging. The demographic evolution makes middle aged individuals an increasingly significant group of the population. Health promotion programs must pay attention to this period of life, which is also part of the life cycle and which has been frequently disregarded by health policies.

How Do Older Adults Learn Medical Instruction
Tolulope Adeniji
Poster Session
Not only is ageing a risk factor for many conditions, older adults are complex and vulnerable to many conditions. Patients need to be educated to achieve effective health outcomes. This paper considers how older adults learn medical instruction through a narrative review of their learning style and literacy skills. This study found that tailored medical education, taking into account older adults' learning style and literacy skills, facilitates overall health outcomes in older adults.

Social Well-being and Utilisation of Health and Social Care Services in Older Age
Sarah Assaad
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
With increasing trends in loneliness and social isolation, more attention has been given to understanding the role of social factors in decreasing the burden on health and social care systems. The aim of this paper is to systematically identify reviews that investigated associations of social factors with health and social care service utilisation in older age. Following PRISMA guidelines, nine databases were searched from inception to October 2019, yielding 4197 unique records. Screening and quality appraisal were conducted by two independent reviewers. A total of 36 reviews, mostly from high-income countries were included in a narrative synthesis. Those studied varied from people with specific diseases (such as dementia and cardiac disorders) to outpatients and those in the community. Social support was the main social factor investigated, and all reviews focused on healthcare services utilisation (including re-hospitalisation, institutionalisation, and physician visits) except for one (integrative) review examining adult day service centres. Low social support, being unmarried and living alone were associated with an increased risk of re-hospitalisation and emergency department visits. Volunteering showed no evidence for nursing home admission prevention or reduction. While associations between social support and frequent attendance in primary care, and social relationships and physician visits were inconsistent. This paper highlights the need for more investigations drawing on longitudinal studies with more diversity (like ethnic groups in high-income countries). The findings suggest caution in assuming interventions aimed at strengthening social factors reduce health care utilisation.

Daniel Dasig Jr
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Knowledge derived from the research and experience in the aging and older adults can be processed and integrated into public policies and programs. This study presents a multidisciplinary investigation of societal changes resulting from an aging population. Knowledge translation research in gerontology is the scientific study of the methods to promote the uptake of research findings by aging patients, health care providers, organizations, and policymakers. The barriers and facilitators that influence evidence-based gerontology, frameworks, and tools are also discussed. Public policy decisions are important toward the elderly populations’ better quality of life and improving parameters of daily living through evidence-based practice.

Young Adults' Perceptions of Aging Who Had Close Contacts with Their Grandparent
Cherrie Park
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
People have different perceptions of aging. With well-established study outcomes maintaining that negative perceptions of aging can adversely affect one's life satisfaction in later life, a question remain as to what forms people’s perceptions of aging. To answer this question, quantitative measurement on the perceptions of aging has been frequently used in previous studies. However, perceptions generally have complex dimensions, and therefore might not be captured sufficiently by quantitative approach only. In order to fill the gap, the present study explores the perceptions of aging with a qualitative approach. It specifically considers young adults’ perceptions of aging who had a close contact with a grandparent, based on the contact theory. Fifteen young adults aged 18 to 44 participated in the study. Authors conducted semi-structured interviews for data collection and analyzed the data, using consensual qualitative research method. Results indicate that young adults have critical moments of thinking about their own aging, retaining quite positive attitudes towards it. They also demonstrated specific ideas of how to age happily. Familial intergenerational contacts they had with older persons, their grandparents, were found to have significant impact on their current perceptions of aging. Continued exploration of how people perceive aging and what helps them develop positive attitude towards aging is recommended.

Methodological Challenges of Interviewing Older Persons Living in Extreme Poverty
Owasim Akram
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Interview as a method would continue to remain popular to understand the lived experiences of a vulnerable population. Older persons, as a vulnerable group, require special methodological considerations while interviewing. Experience of interviewing older persons living in extreme poverty can contribute to the methodological innovation for interview-based research. Relying on the experiences of life-history interviews with 37 older persons living in extreme poverty in Bangladesh, this article aims to shed light on the overall experiences and challenges encountered throughout a fieldwork. The research sheds light on several practical, emotional, as well as ethical aspects that impact the interview process. In doing so, the article critically engages in the discussion of power imbalance between researcher and interviewee, informed consent process, dilemmas regarding appropriate mode showing empathy and solidary. Silence of the older persons during interviews found to be innovative if carefully analysed. Recognising that interviews may leave long-lasting emotional scars with researchers, the article stresses having a proper mechanism in place to deal with ethical and emotional concerns equally protecting interviewees and researchers. In conclusion, the research highlights key learning and brings forward crucial questions and concerns to be further debated and investigated.

Functional Limitations in Old Age
Chinari Mathur
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Given the dramatic increase in the number of individuals above sixty years of age in relation to the entire population and attempts towards ensuring healthy and quality lives for the elderly, it becomes important to focus on the experiences of elderly, particularly with a focus on the heterogeneous nature of the population. In this study, the focus has been on the presence of Functional Limitations (physical in nature) that elderly face. The research has been centered on the experiences of elderly and their immediate adult care givers in the family space; to understand how the elderly and their care givers perceive the functional limitations that the elderly face, the challenges faced by them as they overcome the same and reorient, the support systems available along with associated challenged, and how the particular experience influences the family dynamics. An exploratory qualitative research with a constructivist-interpretivist paradigm was best suited and the participants were grouped in a pair of elderly-his/her care giver, hence being treated as a dyad. The researcher has been able to discuss the same in detail and bring out policy-based, program-based, and research-based recommendations.

On What Level Do Social Institutional Regulations Prevent Poverty Risk in Women?
XiuZhen Ding,
Jia Xu
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study explores how far specific institutional regulations towards social benefits in the context of social policies could prevent women-poverty risk in China in the fourteenth-nineteenth century and how far these benefits interact with each other. The paper relates particularly to two perspectives of social benefits, “Outside Marriage Benefits” and “Inside Marriage Benefits”. In the theoretical debate over women’s living situation in ancient China, women are often considered as appendant attached to the family. We argue that specific social policies towards the above-mentioned benefits helped to reduce women’s poverty risk in China and different benefit approaches interact with each other. In order to evaluate this theoretical assumption, this research investigates the generosity of the social benefits from two perspectives. “Outside Marriage Benefits” include owning fortune from the original family, dowry, assistance benefit from public property from the clan and government assistance subsidy and job income. The benefit defined as “Inside Marriage Benefits” include widow’s inheritance benefit and single-mothers’ benefits. This paper introduces a multi-dimensional approach to measure the generosity of social policy towards these social benefits and poverty risks of Chinese women. The empirical study is based on analysis of institutional regulations of social policy and historical records. It turns out that we get a better understanding of how women made their living in the entirely male-dominated society and how social policies prevent or leave gaps open to women-poverty risk if we analyze the role of different combination of women’s social benefits.

How Do We Live Above the Poverty Threshold
Jia Xu
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This article explores how far do “Targeted Poverty Alleviation Social Policy Programs”(TPAP) secure fragile older people from absolute poverty risk in rural China, and how do each field of targeted social policy interact with each other in contributing potential poverty risk in those people. We propose that TPAP secure absolute poverty risk in fragile older people at different level according to different kinds of needs, arguing that the system leave gaps open however to potential poverty risks in fragile older people in rural China. It introduces a multi-dimensional approach to measuring the generosity of TPAP’s social policy programs, investigates the impact of three fields of social policy programs from TPAP system in supporting poor fragile older people to live above absolute poverty threshold in rural China, and explores consequences of social policy programs for contributing potential poverty risk according to fragile older people’s different kinds of needs. The empirical study is based on comparisons of individual profile presentations to describe how far do targeted social policy programs make their impact on specific groups of people in sociological way. Profile data used are from “Rural China Poverty Alleviation Observation Project” (Poverty relief office of the state council, 2013/2019), policy data used are from document analysis of regulations of Targeted Poverty Alleviation Social Policy Programs in China. The findings support argument that generosity condition in different TPAP targeted social policy programs vary in their impact on preventing absolute poverty risk in fragile older people on the basis of different level of needs.
