Clinical and Advocacy Issues in a Challenged System of Care for Senior Citizens: What Can We Do about a Broken System of Care?

Abstract

Attending to the medical and mental health needs of the geriatric population poses challenges for the well prepared clinician. Developing and maintaining an adequate and functioning system of care challenges both local and federal regulating agencies, legislative bodies, hospital and nursing facility administrators, and advocacy organizations. This discussion focus is on the current state of nursing home and geriatric psychiatric care at a state and national level in the United States and seeks to generate and share ideas about how to approach clinical, ethical, and administrative dilemmas the present on a regular basis to the busy clinician. Role of advocacy by professional medical and allied healthcare organizations will be considered in the face of a fluid and changing healthcare structural and financial situation.
