Abstract

The aim of this study is to clarify the epidemiology of fall injuries among adults using assistive devices residing in a retirement village/ hospital/or rehabilitation home. The method/analytical strategy that this study employs is retrospective review of hospital admission records to determine the demographics (such as age, race, marital status, gender, place of residence, education level and employment), history of falls in the past two years, the types of injuries obtained from the ICD10 codes (M00-M99 and S00-T88) for the health care visits and identify participants who are at risk of falls using assistive devices admitted to hospital as result of falls or living in a retirement village and rehabilitation homes at a community level. It is expected that those using assistive devices will have fewer or lesser severe falls compared to those that do not, and that the type and severity of falls will differ by place of residence, age, gender, socioeconomic status, and ethnic background.
