Variety Is the Spice of Life

Abstract

We will perform our show ‘Spice of Life’. This play encourages conversation and engages audiences in the discussion of the importance of our older generation, breaking down stereotypes and celebrating the individual. Haylo Theatre Company reframes the stories of older people into a performance that provide meaning and confirmation, not just to those whose stories are being told but also as a prompt for the stories of its audience – the older generation, family members, caregivers and health care educators. “As we get older our choices can be limited, is this because we are incapable or is this because people assume we are? Regardless of our abilities or inabilities, why should we be given a limited choice…after all variety is the Spice of Life.” The aim is to celebrate the value and importance of older people. The show affirms why its important to offer choice and variety in terms of activities and socials aimed at older people. And helps to confirm the message that we are all individuals regardless of our age and ability. It demonstrates the importance of a person-centered approach, and busts the myths and misconceptions surrounding older people. We communicate through theatre, providing an interactive experience, outside of the conventional theatre space. This performance offers a more personal way to introduce themes around ageing.
