Blood Is Thicker Than Water: Patterns of Caregiving for the Elderly

Abstract

The combination of continued increase of longevity and sustained sub-replacement fertility lead to a condition of population aging that occurs in tandem with the shifting of family structure and family relationship. While diverging trends of family structure are present across social categories and generate complicate patterns of inequalities, previous scholars are generally in agreement about the greater risk of instability among contemporary families. To what extent does family structure contribute to the wellbeing of the elderly? In this paper, I examine whether being in a network of stable families matters to the well-being of an elderly family member controlling for other socioeconomic factors.
