Role of Thai Local Government: From an Active-aging Framework to Good Practice

Abstract

Population ageing is occurring in Thailand at one of the most rapid rates in Asia. Thai population will reach its peak of some 70.62 million people by 2030 with older adults encompassing 25%. In addressing the challenges of the ageing society, the local government of Sakon Nakhon Province in conjunction with the Department of Older Persons has adopted an active-ageing framework to promote older people’s participation in enhancing quality of life and wellbeing as people age and building a feeling of worthiness. This initiative is one of the most successful projects implemented by local government in Thailand. This paper therefore examines the role of local government in promoting the well-being as well as enhancing social and civic participation among the elderly through an active-ageing framework. Data were collected from observations, focus group discussion, and in-depth interviews with the local government staff and members of the elderly club. The results stated that a positive mindset about aging, high participation among the older persons and a system support at the local level led to adding years to life of the older persons.
