Development of State Health Insurance for an Aging Population in Thai Society

Abstract

Thai society today is an aging society with the older persons about 9,934,309 or 15.07 percent of the total population. The growing older population goes along with increased quality care, especially in the health dimension. This paper explores the development of Thai society for taking care of older persons equally by developing services systems and benefits through the state health insurance system. This paper is based on research done by interviewing method with relevant stakeholders finds that since the past until the present, the Thai state pays attention to older persons by providing health insurance in the form of without charge continuously as they are called namely “the group of society should be providing support.” They should pay attention to the aging society, adding more appropriate welfare to their daily lives. At present, the national health insurance system has been providing more benefits by deepening collaboration with other parties in the community to enhance a better quality of life in the dependent older persons with proactive activities as a key strategy.
