ESL Teachers’ Global Competence in English Lessons

Abstract

English language teachers’ global competence assists students’ global competence development in language learning. This study identifies Malaysian ESL teachers’ understanding and knowledge of global competence. It primarily focuses on examining the perceptions of English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers on global competence in English teaching. 172 Malaysian ESL teachers responded to the web-based google form survey questionnaire. Findings indicate that the ESL teachers perceived global competence as crucial to be inculcated in English lessons. They believed that they had integrated globally competent teaching practices into ESL lessons. The respondents showed understanding and knowledge of global competence, although the extent to which they understood the elements of global competence in ESL teaching was doubtful. The respondents also agreed to insufficient support from the Ministry of Education (MoE) to develop their global competence or globally competent teaching. The findings served as a template for a larger-scale study that focuses on implementing global competence in the local and non-western contexts. Besides, the overall awareness of developing ESL teachers’ global competence and mastering its elements for integration in language lessons require more attention.
