Political Transnationalism in Mexico
Daniel Zorrilla-Velazquez
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The external vote is a recent right that encourages new ways of transnational political participation among Mexican immigrants. Since 2006, and until the last presidential elections, the number of Mexicans voting abroad has increased significantly. Along with this participation, Mexican immigrants have demonstrated a further interest in political activities that eventually will have an impact on their communities of origin. However, the mechanisms implemented by the Mexican government have not been enough to provide its citizens abroad the proper tools to exert their rights and to participate in the decision-making process. This paper analyzes the specific characteristics of the Mexican diaspora and their historical, social, and political background that has paved the way for the implementation of the external vote, everything from a transnational theory perspective. The study was conducted using a descriptive method of the external vote evolution and the changes that occurred after the political alternance until now. To sum up, we conclude that it is necessary to consider in-person and internet voting as new possible solutions.

The present work was prepared in the context of the course “Folk literature, erudite literature and virtual orality of the Postgraduate Program “Folklore and Literature- George. A. Megas” (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), taught by Mr. George Katsadoros. The purpose of this paper is to examine a new type of narrative- if chain letters could be characterized as so- that is transmitted anonymously via the Internet and sometimes promises good luck and sometimes bad luck to the recipient and potential sender. The issue is of particular interest if one considers the evolution of such messages over time, as well as their relevance to the internet hoaxes that circulate on the Internet and often manipulate its users, although information about the dangers of the internet can be described as more than adequate today. Next, there is a mention of the causes and motivations of persuasion but also about modern chain messages on social media that create “human chains” and mobilize consciences about current issues. The samples of chain letters that are included in this work were collected with the help of my friends, whom I thank for their valuable help.

Eliza and Heterodoxy as Pedagogy
Dora Kourkoulou
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Video games have, in the last two decades, received revived attention on playful technologies as alternative spaces of public pedagogical interest, where institutional and disciplinary boundaries have faded, and innovative ways of creating and disseminating knowledge emerged. Play holds, in this context, an affective appeal, which lies on its perceived heterodoxal character with respect to learning, and the institutions that it occupies, on the one hand, and on the deployment of playful agon imaginations, on the other. There is, however, ambivalence in this reception of heterodoxy: game-based platforms are dependent on story and community cohesion, while either suppressing dissenting voices, or logging them as temporary disruptive drives towards innovation -and ultimate (re-)integration. Cutting through these opposites, the relationship between algorithmic harmonious flow and narrative dissent, I argue, constitutes a public pedagogical event, the mechanisms of which beg examination. Drawing on critical theories, I am proposing a framework for interpreting rhetorics of heterodoxy on contemporary technological design, by asking how aesthetic conflate with often conflicting structural elements. These conflation points serve to obscure encoded rigidity, epistemological introversion, and the identity politics that intersect them. This paper utilizes case study material from an interactive novel game, Eliza, in order to examine heterodoxy as a narrative trope, methodology, and public pedagogy. Through the examination of game instances where deviation from predictive algorithms are allowed and evaluated, new insights on how orthodoxy is remediated, transmitted and critiqued in contemporary cultural texts emerge.

The Legend of Llorona
Georgia Haikali
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Llorona or Weeping Woman is one of Mexico’s most famous legends with pre-hispanic roots that has become famous around the world. She was a woman who killed her children out of anger for her husband and now wanders the rivers at night and mourns for their loss. Her cry foretells death. Books, songs, poems, scientific articles have been written, movies have been made about this legend. But legends, myths, folk tales about weeping women, women who experienced violence and were led to it exist all over the world. In the present work, an attempt is made to connect Llorona with other similar legends or myths, mainly European. In the long course of her existence she was symbolized in various ways, expressing each time the values and concerns of different civilizations, ending up to a twisted perception of her being by the horror movie industry.

Understanding the Impacts of Heterodoxies in Religious, Societal, and Political Spheres of Modern Day India
Rajit Das
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Heterodoxies provide the avenue for people to take the unorthodox approach, hoping for new insights to existing problems found in society. To question such heterodoxies would mean to dig deeper into beliefs, how they first emerge, and why heterodoxies were needed to shift the mindset of people who prefer tradition over progressive ideas. By applying the concept of heterodoxy to India, a further exploration is done to unearth those that are found within the religious, social, and political aspects of the Indian state. By doing so, their impacts can be understood better, to see if whether these heterodoxies identified have made a lasting difference in modern India and threats to make it reach a dead end.

A Feminist Critique of the Portrayals of Sexual Harassment in Bollywood Indian Cinema
Meghna Bhat
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Cinema has a profound effect on its audiences across the globe especially when social constructions of gender through cinema play an instrumental role in shaping public perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, thoughts and reactions. But when cinematic portrayals and audience interpretations may contribute to a hostile environment condoning gender violence, it becomes a universal social problem that needs to be investigated. This qualitative paper addresses a gap in literature by examining how sexual harassment in public spaces including street harassment is depicted in one widely viewed and successfully commercial form of popular culture from India, Bollywood cinema. How is street harassment and sexual harassment defined, constructed and represented in selected Hindi films (released between 2019-2021)? How do gender roles and relations show up through these portrayals and protagonists? What are the possible implications of these images on the public perceptions of sexual violence in the South Asian diaspora? Using a feminist lens, these questions are addressed and emerging key themes are first critiqued and analyzed. Second, this interdisciplinary research paper challenges the traditional and mainstream narratives and perceptions about dangerously accepting and romanticizing of street and sexual harassment in reality and its implications of these media representations on South Asian diaspora communities. This study contributes to the fields of criminology, sociology, gender and women's studies, film, media and cultural studies, and global studies.

Discussing Motherhood in the Social Media - Transnational Approaches
Irini Dragasi
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The purpose of the paper is to present, analyse, and interpret the problems that govern a mother of the 21st century, as they are projected in the pre-eminent means of communication and expression, through Internet. More specifically, through closed-ended groups on online platform of Facebook, which are formed exclusively for new or experienced mothers, targeting on the transmission of knowledge, concerns, advice, dangers and others, I focus on the constantly increasing denial and criticism of the Medical Science from the frontier stage of conception of the fetus, until the exit of the new-born into the society, 40 days after his birth, going to the final stage, the baptism. References are given from the ancient motif of the Dodecatheism, up to the present social reality, in order to highlight the common motifs inherent in the modern Greek mother (return to natural childbirth, rationalization, supremacy of religious faith over scientific data, etc.), patterns that become visible transnationally. My research was carried out through participatory observation and my inclusion in a variety of groups on social media, a thorough study of medical textbooks related to motherhood, with folk and medical orientations.

Narratives from the Catastrophic Earthquake in Athens in 1999
Katerina Schoina
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The aim of this paper is the folkloristic examination of the great earthquake in Athens, on September 7th, 1999. Such a catastrophe can radically change a community, such as the way and quality of life, habits, relationships, natural environment and create fear and collective traumatic memories. Therefore, an earthquake can be part of the folk culture, as it can bring about significant changes in society, which is studied by the Science of Folklore. The 5.9 magnitude earthquake from the unknown rift in Parnitha Mountain, hit the city at 14:56 was the deadliest earthquake of the last 50 years, but also the one with the highest damage cost in Greece. Within 15 seconds, 145 people lost their lives and about 50,000 were left homeless. The earthquake made Athens change in many ways, not only in terms of seismological data, but also the people themselves, which is a collective traumatic experience for those who experienced it then. This paper is based on research methods followed by the science of Folklore, in combination with interdisciplinary approaches and methodological tools of the sciences of Anthropology and Ethnography. The collection of stories is carried out through the qualitative method by conducting interviews in Athens with people who experienced the earthquake of 1999. More specifically, victims of the catastrophe are included - people who lived through the events, volunteers at the Hellenic Red Cross, members of the Fire Service, medical and nursing staff, journalists, reporters and seismologists.

Confidence to Speak English
Asantha U Attanayake
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study involves more than 4500 students from the post-colonial South Asian nations of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and it reveals that students’ most desired English language skill is speaking, but that they refrain from speaking due to a lack of confidence that stems from a fear of being ridiculed by society. This large-scale study was instigated by studies that span from 2007 to 2017 involving about 2000 Sri Lankan undergraduates that produced similar findings. This leads us to believe that the language attitudes existing in society may influence students more than the numerous well-accepted teaching methodologies for teaching English that are currently used in post-colonial South Asia. The standards set by the elites in post-colonial South Asian societies works against English language learners in their efforts to speak English by causing Language Attitude Anxiety (LAA), which manifests in a lack of confidence to speak English. At the same time, societies that do not use English at all seem to negatively influence English language learners also causing LAA. This anxiety may then be projected onto learning English in general with a negative effect on learner identities and possible selves. Our work emphasizes the importance of a) dialogue on language attitudes as an academic discourse and b) building confidence to speak English as an essential rectifying measure to eliminate Language Attitude Anxiety.

The Land Acquisition Act of 1894 and Its Impact in the Making of New Delhi (1911-1931)
Vanshika Kirar
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
New Delhi became the national capital of India during colonial rule in 1911 when the British government decided to shift its capital from Calcutta. One of the immediate requirements after the setting of the new capital city of New Delhi was to fulfill the requirement of land to establish New Imperial Buildings with the help of The Land Acquisition Act of 1894 and its impact on the native people of Delhi. The British government resettled Native People to the different part of the country. My study examines how difficult it was for British Government to compensate people, how they themselves changed the policies, and how Native people reacted to it. I also highlight the challenges that the goverment faced here in New Delhi. This paper explains the conflict in the making of policy between policy makers and Native people.

The Two Africas
Alvin Joseph
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The so called 'dark' continent of Africa had a tenacious hold upon the European imagination. From the fifth century to the present, the mind of Europe has found Africa both fascinating and repellent. It is most familiar as a form of landscape as seen in the description of a journey into the interior Africa in Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness". The Africa that is seen in such a description is characterized by impenetrable forests, throbbing drums, sudden sunsets, black water fever and primitive customs. This is an Africa, which has no meaning and no coherence and is in fact the 'heart of darkness'. Thus, unlike the African society in "Heart of Darkness", which is portrayed as having developed no culture, the African society in Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart" has an admirable civilization. The language of the African characters in "Things Fall Apart" cannot be described as babbling or animal like in any way. On the contrary, it is very effective medium for communicating the beautiful way of life that is portrayed in the novel. The dichotomous representation of Africa in Conrad and Achebe reinforces the idea that reality, after all, is a construct made possible by the discourses validating it. The fictional account of Africa by Conrad and Achebe could be placed into opposite poles, one feeding on the dominant colonial stereotypes about the continent and the other trying to liberate it from the colonial vituperation to which it was a victim for a long time.

The Evolution of a Social Practice
Stavroula Sotiropoulou
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Fairytale narration in Greece is widely considered as a stable, long-lasting social – cultural practice, despite the revolutionary changes that happened during the 20th century in the field of Media Technology. The evolution from Premodern to Modern and Postmodern Era has only affected the means of this social-cultural practice and caused its adaptability to rapid changes. More specifically, we will focus on the transition from grandparents’ fairytale narration next to the fireplace, especially in agricultural regions, to the narration through the post-war Greek National Radio with the legendary Aunt Lena (Antigoni Metaxa) and Lilipoupoli. Then we will continue with television fairytale narration, firstly with Aunt Lena in the beginning of the 1970’s and a little later with the “Paramythas” Nikos Pilavios and finally to the “Internet Era”, with the narration of fairytales on YouTube and Spotify. Our goal is to feature the differences and weak spots from the archetypical form of this practice to its recent forms.

From Agrapha to Aliartos - Maintaining Identity to a Completely New Place and Time
Nikoletta Chondou
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
People come and go from different places to new ones in their own time. Despite all the difficulties that the emigrant population meets up with, memories of some “good old times” are always by the emigrants to support them in a unique way (mostly by warming their souls and hearts). People from Agrapha, a complex of several mostly isolated villages in the mainland of Greece (Evritania and Karditsa), during 1960, 1970 and even 1980 emigrated to other major cities such as Athens, Agrinio or Karditsa. Nevertheless, an amount of people during their migration to Athens settled down to Aliartos, as land was given to anyone who wanted to start a new life in the area at the time. Right after they settled to their new homes, they started to remember their everyday life back to Agrapha and tried to maintain it in their new home. As part of that population in this paper I seek matters of memory and identity in a new place, with the most valuable help from villagers, neighbors, and contributors of my settlement of Evritanes in Mazi one of the many villages surrounding Aliartos.
