Educated Unemployment among Youth in Kerala: Challenges for Decent Work and Sustainable Development

Abstract

The educated youth are the worst victims of unemployment in Kerala. Youth shows strong passion, motivation, and willpower which also make them the most valuable human resource for fostering the economic development of a nation. Youth is a new entrant to the labor force, and are particularly vulnerable as workers. Decent work sums up the aspirations of people in their working lives. Decent work, employment creation, social protection, rights at work, and social dialogue represent integral elements of Sustainable Development that acknowledge the inherent connection between decent labor market conditions and dignified livelihoods. Holistic employment interventions must promote job growth and skills development, and ensure decent working conditions, social protection, and respect for human rights at work. Such measures will help to ensure that youth with disabilities, indigenous youth, young women, and youth living in conflict and post-conflict situations are engaged and benefit from sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Though Kerala has achieved much progress with regards to the spread of education, health services, social welfare measures and infrastructural development, the state has not been able to solve the problem of unemployment among youth who are a vibrant section of society and who ultimately determine the sustainable development of the state. As a researcher I study unemployment among the educated youth of Kerala in order to suggest measures to overcome the problem.
