Intolerance Towards Hybridity: The Importance of Keeping Identity 'Pure'

Abstract

This paper explores the psychological reactions of Mexican immigrants towards Mexican-Americans ‘hybrid’ identity. In order to do so, a series of individual cases are discussed, which serve to show how for certain Mexican immigrants in the U.S. state of Arizona, perceive Mexican-American’s language, way of thinking, dressing and even performing as ‘un-authentic’, ‘pathetic’, and ‘designed by the white Americans’. Authors such as Homi K. Bhabha, Frantz Fanon, and Mary Douglas serve as theoretical frameworks to understand this psychosocial phenomenon.
