Abstract
Education in India is provided by the public sector as well as the private sector. Education is today largely paid for and almost entirely administered by governmental bodies or non-profit organizations. This situation has developed gradually and is now taken so much for granted that little explicit attention is paid to it any longer. It mainly directs us to the reasons for the special treatment of education given by governmental educational institutions. Even countries that are predominantly supporters of free enterprise, have well organized educational and health care systems ring under strict governmental control. The result, considered by this study, is the indiscriminate extension of governmental responsibility. A stable and democratic society is impossible without widespread acceptance of some common set of values that cannot be attained without a minimum degree of literacy and education on the part of a majority of citizens. Education contributes to both government and private sectors and is vital for sustenance of both the sectors. Consequently, the gain from the education of a child accrues not only to the child or to his parents but to other members of the society as well, the education of one’s child contributes to other people’s welfare by promoting a stable and democratic society.
