Textbook Development Theories and Implementation in Pakistan

Abstract

This research is an exploratory documentary analysis of textbooks with an aim to investigate textbook development theories and their implementation in Pakistan. The rationale behind taking up this study was the author’s observation and experience in academia that left him convinced that textbook development in Pakistan lacked both direction and underpinning theoretical basis. The acuteness of the problem can be assessed from the fact that most academics in this field are unaware of the key terms even, let alone grasp the full scale of the issue. The findings of the study support the hypothesis that there is a serious dearth of knowledge and implementation of textbook theories in Pakistan. Federal and Punjab Boards have put in some efforts in this regard, but that does not suffice. In the light of the findings the researcher presented some recommendations to ameliorate the situation. There should be a national level resource centre with a mandate to implement the theories. The stakeholders, ranging from the teaching faculty to the publishers, should be given rigorous training to enhance their textbook development knowledge. Furthermore, resources should be allocated to carry out further researches to examine the prescribed textbooks so as to rid them of deficiencies.
