The Effect of Poor Neighborhood Image on Total City Image: Lessons from the Successful Case of La Boca

Abstract

City branding research, in nature, deals with cases of cities that succeeded to position themselves positively in varied audiences’ perception mainly tourists and residents. Despite the fact that this realm gained vast research over the years, the effect that neighborhoods can have on general cities almost didn’t get attention from scholars and mainly the effect of poor neighborhoods. This research investigates the impact of LA Boca neighborhood image on the total image of visitors in Buenos Aires based on fifty depth interviews with tourists. The results of this study show that the general image of Buenos Aires in travelers mind is derived very positively on La Boca image. The implication of this study is that cities should invest in making poor neighborhood an essential tourist attraction and by that decreasing the crime in the certain neighborhood and city.
