Divorce and Heart Disease: An Ignored Epidemiological Risk Factor in Disease Prevention

Abstract

Divorce has previously been identified as an important epidemiological marker for higher mortality and morbidity. However, little attention has been placed on how divorce can cause higher mortality in divorcees, particularly deaths due to coronary heart disease. This study outlines current research findings that support a pathophysiologic mechanism for divorce-related coronary deaths and coronary heart disease and the global impact of incorporating this knowledge into practice.
