Abstract
Dating back as far as Caesar, propaganda and censorship are not new. We’ve seen them utilized time and again, in terrifyingly mind-blowing ways. But the Internet has changed the game and has made every single one of us vulnerable. How many times in the last year have you heard or talked about fake news? You’re aware of it, you’ve seen it, you’ve ignored it, you’ve probably even fallen victim to it yourself a few times. Fake news is more than clickbait to lure you onto shady webpages, it is being used as a political tool by governments around the world. While Russia’s ongoing “Active Measures” are the most immediately present in our lives as Americans, propaganda and censorship are being used around the world to manipulate millions of people. The only way to recognize propaganda and censorship when we see them is to understand them: how they’re used, where they’re used, and (most importantly) why they’re used. This interactive document will guide you through the latest theories and examples to help you become better informed Internet users.
