Discharge Rate Decrease at Sukkur Barrage and Lifestyle of Communties in Command Area Portray a Negative Picture of Water Resource Management

Abstract

Sukkur Barrage was established in the year 1935 before the making of Pakistan. It marks the first ever barrage of Pakistan. During an investigation carried out using forty years discharge rate data on the Sukkur Barrage, twenty years climate data, and twenty years agricultural land use data accompanied by the use of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems applications. Results indicate that the discharge levels during past few decades have decreased by fifty percent. Meanwhile trends in temperature show upward movement in the line and precipitation have sustained very low. The data gives a good graphical view of drought years and wet years in Pakistan. The data was compared with Human Development Indicators in the command area of the Sukkur Barrage. It can be concluded that the rivers flows directly affect agricultural land use and the quality of the life among communities. However, strong water resource management and water education quality in life can be maintained to some extent.
