Reclaiming the Future: A Better Life in the Tropics - French Retirees in Cambodia and Vietnam

Abstract

This project studies French retirees in two places in Cambodia and Vietnam, Sihanoukville and Nha Trang. Small pensions, the rise of cost of living in France, the search for adventure and failed marriages had led some Frenchmen to take their retirement to the tropics. Using literature on “sociologies of individuals,” allows me to explore key moments redefining the life of these retirees and how they use their own agency to improve their own life, to make an important biographical transition in their life. This paper argues that through such a transition they are blurring the boundaries of age differences and challenging the ideas that certain activities and roles are only appropriate for certain age groups.
