Role of Culture in the Perpetuation of Honour Killing and Its Impact on the Sustainability of Tribal Society: Myths, Realities, and Recommendations

Abstract

This study was carried out in tribal regions of Pakistan to examine various causative factors in honour killing that affect the sustainability of tribal social structure. The study concluded that honour killing is considered as normal act in tribal society as per the socio-cultural values and customary practices and such cultural identity should be persevered as no other alternative is available for removing the shame and restoring honour. However, attitudes of the people about honour were more rigid in the past than the present. Further, women are mostly the victim of honour killing while killing of children in the name of honour does not prevail in the area due to the reason that women were killed soon after either their involvement in illicit relationships or after manifestation of their pregnancy. Keeping closed eyes and silence in honour related matter is rarely found in the area while seeking for divorce, remarriage after getting divorce from husband and their inability to conceive does not result honour killing. Lastly, in case of rape the rapist is killed and not the victim. The local leaders, political party’s workers, and educated chunk of population have to play much greater role to curb honour killing. Creating awareness amongst all the male population of tribal areas to give freedom of education for all concerned females to grown up in the future, and having religious clerics perform a true role to overcome this criminal act are recommendations of the study.
