Social Aspects of Sinamot : Reconstruction of Family Pattern Relation in Marriage Traditions in Batak Toba, North Sumatera

Abstract

This discussion is motivated by the fact that the modern-day society is beginning to have a negative stigma towards sinamot. The first impression most of the Batak Toba community when hearing of sinamot at this time is expensive. If viewed from the view of Toba Batak society today, sinamot tends to lead to something that smells economical. This study considers the view of the Batak Toba community by studying the meaning of sinamot, exploring the pedagogical aspects in the sinamot, and examining the relevance of sinamot to the strengthening of social relations of Batak Toba society. Based on the research, the following results are obtained: First, Sinamot has five meanings. 1) as dowries that determine the validity of a marriage; 2) as the binding of two different families; 3) as a manifestation of self-esteem both bride and groom; 4) as a form of appreciation and gratitude to parents who have raised and educated a child; and 5) as a life assurance afforded by the bridegroom to the bride. Secondly, there are some pedagogical aspects found in the sinamot tradition, such as the value of respect for human dignity and gratitude to parents. Third, the tradition of this sinamot still needs to be implemented until today because of its meaning which is considered good and indeed the values that exist in the culture are still relevant to human life at this time although there are differences in practice.
