Audio and Social Activism: Using the Podcast for the Visibility of a Feminist Discourse

Abstract

This study aims to reflect on the practice of the podcast and its possibilities of use as an instrument of identity affirmation, particularly when it has to do with minority groups struggling for hegemony and recognition by means of discourses dealing with social and political causes. In a scenario such as the Brazilian one, marked by a weakened public communication system and by a strong economic and ideological control of the large communication vehicles, we believe that the podcast has the potential to favor the development of new visibility strategies and to broad the scope of action of activists linked to different causes and movements. In this work, we approach these issues starting from the analysis of productions that present different approaches to feminist discourse and/or focus on various themes, such as wage inequality and working conditions, femicide, and xenophobia, as well as maternity, equal rights, professional performance, militancy, economic and sexual equality, among others. We mainly analyze Brazilian productions, but also those from other countries, such as Spain, United States, United Kingdom and France, that exemplify this wide range of references and that express different possibilities of sound and storytelling languages. For the theoretical approach of the theme we will resort to contributions of authors such as Jesús Martín-Barbero, Aníbal Quijano, Renato Ortiz, Stuart Hall and Pierre Bourdieu, as well as others who work with the study of narrative journalism and discourse analysis focused on media productions.
