Surviving through Your SCARS: The Helping Hand of the Humanities During a Crisis

Abstract

The humanitites have an pivitol role in helping humans develop an understanding of the world in which they live as well as in developing ways of relating to this world. Reflecting on Moby-Dick, Julius Caesar, Henry V, and Candide allows one to see that the world humans inhabit is full of white whales, uncertainties and crises that can create lasting scars. This paper explores how the humanities allows one to learn to live through these scars by developing 1. Self-Reliance through reflecting on Thoreau and Kropotkin, 2. Critical and Creative Thinking through reflecting on Aristotle, Dewey, Mill, Kant, and Burke, 3. Adaptability through reflecting on Huck Finn, Julius Caesar, Chekhov, The Call of the Wild, and Aquinas, and 4. Resilience through reflecting on The Odyssey and Aquinas.
