Redefining Literature: Blogs and the Digitalized Self in Contemporary Spanish Literature

The reason is that the digital format has meant a different way for authors to interact with their readers. These readers have also seen their roles redefined as in addition to readers they acts a viewers and listeners as well in many cases due to the visual and audio content in many blogs. At the same time, readers often influence the authors’ narratives content due to their interaction with authors in blogs, which pose the question about what do we consider literature nowadays and what is its relation to the digital self today. Several narrative examples and theories including “Humanities Scholars and Library-Based Digital Publishing” by Katrina Fenlon, Megan Senseney, Maria Bonn, and Janet Swatscheno are used in this review to explore these questions.

Books For Global Readers
Bahar Kucukcaglayan
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The cover of the books today is very much different than the cover of the ’80s. Thirty years ago, when you look at a cover you could easily understand what the book was about, and likely to understand who it was for and what the author stood for if taking sides was necessary. Today you can buy a book in any language from your home. Some book covers are like design objects that speak for the whole variety of book readers globally. They may be great design objects, but this paper is asking questions about how globalization affects the publishing industry in terms of the book covers. Should a book cover be more than an award-winning graphic poster? Should it represent a view of the book? Is it ok if a Haruki Murakami book looks like a Dostoyevski book in any language anywhere around the world? The paper analyses new graphic design styles, content, and cover relationship and try to consider if they are obstacles for designing original covers and creating hybrid culture works. The paper also brings in censorship and e-book concepts in terms of how they change the book industry for global readers.

Journals as Gatekeepers
Lyzette Hoffman
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Publishing endorses research and therefore allots journals a gatekeeper function in the knowledge economy. Which structures, policies, and practices can assist a journal in this gatekeeping function? In a case study measures taken by a journal to strengthen its position among similar journals, distinguishing itself as a gatekeeper to be trusted and supported, is examined. The measures taken include, among others, the diversifying of reviewers and restructuring of the editorial board. Comparing the new measures implemented within the journal structures, policies and practices with other journals and results found in the literature, recommendations could be made regarding best practices for improving the gatekeeper function of a journal.
