English Language, Diaspora, Multiculturalism and New Media as Contemporary Realities

Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of English language at a global level in the context of multiculturalism, diaspora, and new media. The limits of time and space, the distances between cultures, between languages and traditions, as well as between people, have decreased drastically and have enabled new conditions of communication and relations. In such contexts, I argue that English language mediates between cultural diversity and human interactions, contributing to new forms of communication and new meanings, as well as new identities. In contemporary times, under the influence of and even necessity for the world wide web in various fields of knowledge, inter-human and inter-cultural relations, the humanities, linguistic and comparative literary studies, as well as interdisciplinary and cultural studies need to expanded their relative borders in order to accommodate the new experiences that the digital era generates. The study provides a meta-analysis regarding the role of the new media and digital technology in the circulation and evolution of English language, and I propose to look at English and its fusion with other languages as the basis of diasporic writings and communication in multicultural and online contexts.
