Analysis of Social and Linguistics Factors: The Case of “Enredados” Movie

Abstract

This paper analyzes social and linguistics factors in the use of speech in the Enredados movie. It is qualitative research using the corpus linguistics methodology to collect information about language use based on gender, age, social status, and the stress of phrases in the use of spoken language in the “Enredados” movie. The data collected refer to the types of words and phrases people use in the play according to the social aspects mentioned above. The data was written in two charts to do the analysis and the discussion. The results show that social factors influenced the use of the type of words and the stress in phrases during their conversations. First, the vocabulary that a woman and a man use differ in the way they brought up due to the specific roles they learn since they were children. It also showed that women talk more than men. Then, age influence the selection of words according to their needs depending on the stage of life people are. Later, the social status based on economic situation interferes with the choice of standard vocabulary and phrases. Finally, people use more phrases rather than complete sentences to communicate, and the stress is located almost always at the end of the word. The most common words stressed are adjectives and nouns because of the necessity of the social context.
