American Genius and the Future of Higher Education: Why Humanities Have Never Been More Important

Abstract

This paper describes how a little over a century ago science kept seamless company with the eureka moments of poetry, painting, and the humanities in the American context. It then addresses the reasons that this seamless integration–this undisciplined approach to creativity and generation of new ideas–deteriorated with the rise of the research university. The final section explores how American universities can foster ‘un-disciplined’ thinking and inquiry for students. It describes a few examples of such efforts that suggest future directions for students, instructors, and the universities that support them.
